Rooted in the community.

Our care for animals reaches past the walls of the hospital, to the shelter, the rescues and the families who call Humboldt County home.

We are contracted to provide veterinary care for the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. Through the shelter’s Emergency Medical Fund, injured and ill animals get critical treatment and a chance at a healthier future.

We also work with local rescues, providing medical care for rescued pets while they recover and find loving homes.

Beyond animal welfare, we are members of the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce and proud to support local children’s sports programs that bring families together.

Our story

Along the North Coast of California, among the redwoods, McKinleyville Animal Care Center is a locally owned, non-corporate, female-owned veterinary hospital. Heidi Chavez and Dr. Cathy Schmall bought the practice in 2015, and both had worked here before. Many of our clients have been with us for years, and so has much of our team.
